However, First Sheds are experts at designing double garages to be exempt from DA so all you require is relatively straightforward building approval. A double garage is typically 6m wide x 6m long with a 2.2m access door. A typical carpark at Woolies is about 2.5m wide and 5m long. With a 6m x 6m double garage, you have extra space to park and move around. Another very popular design is 6m wide x 8m long, which provides storage or bench space.

Don’t be tricked by online retailers selling a “double garage” for a few grand. A pile of steel on your verge isn’t a finished garage. You still need block plans drafted, approvals completed, earthworks, stormwater, a concrete slab, and the full build. You may also need demolition, a new driveway, retaining walls, plumbing or electrical work. A complete double-garage build typically costs between $30,000 and $50,000 depending on the scope.
